Aim your camera mounted flash, (where possible), slightly away from the subject. Set spot metering and ETTL, (Canon), and aim at a bright spot. Fire the flash, and get less reflection and more subtle shading due to the spot metering.

Usually true, if used direct or inappropriately. Here's a super simple flash trick for you, though....
